|I know a man who doesnít have good relationships with other pastors. One day a few pastors met with him. At this meeting he told the pastors that he had prayed and asked God which churches were His Spirit welcome in. He says that God told him that His Spirit wasnít welcome in any of our churches. Itís no wonder many pastors donít care for him, and that he doesnít have any favor with them. Nehemiah interacted with people differently, and had different results. Letís take a look ...
(Neh 1:11 NIV) O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man."
Nehemiah knew that in order to be successful we need favor from God. "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
Favor - friendly regard shown toward another especially by a superior
1) approval or liking.
2) an act of kindness beyond what is due or usual.
3) overgenerous preferential treatment.
(Neh 2:3 NIV) ... I said to the king, "May the king live forever! "
If you want to receive favor from someone, itís always good to say something nice about them.
(Neh 2:5 NIV) and I answered the king, "If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my fathers are buried so that I can rebuild it."
Before he made his request, he told the King he realized he had the authority to grant or deny this request. He didnít demand anything; he asked. Nehemiah received favor from the King and was able to rebuild Jerusalem. Joseph was also a man who received a lot of favor from God.
(Gen 39:1-6 NIV) Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Godís favor included Joseph being sold as a slave. The favor of God brings us success, but it does not mean everything will be nice and easy.
When Godís favor was on Joseph, his master noticed it, and put him in charge of all he had. "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
Joseph was sold as a slave by his very own brothers, but it doesnít appear that he had any grudges or bitterness toward them. Somehow he had a great attitude. Itís very difficult to receive an act of kindness beyond what is due or usual, if you have a bad attitude or hold grudges.
You canít let your circumstances affect you. Youíll always have trouble. You must decide that you will always be faithful and work hard. If you do, you can ask God for His favor, and then look for the favor of people as well.
(Gen 41:12-14 NIV) Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my position, and the other man was hanged. So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.
When you live right with God you will build a good reputation. Word will get out, and people will come looking for you. It may take some time, but it will happen. "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
i.e., The Rescue Mission sent John E. to Binghamton to find two people to hire in Binghamton. Someone encouraged John to contact me. He did, but forgot who gave him my name. At that time I was not looking for a new job, but several months later I was. I called John back and he told me they would be ready to train and hire two people in about two months. Two months later I had a job. "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
(Gen 41:37-41 NIV) Josephís plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials. So Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?" Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you." So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt."
Joseph interpreted Pharaohís dreams. Pharaoh was so impressed with Joseph that he immediately hired him as Prime Minister. As Prime Minister, second only to Pharaoh, Joseph was invested with the honors of that office and given Pharaoh's signet ring, which gave him authority to sign documents and transact business in Pharaoh's name. When it is so evident that the Spirit of God lives in you, people will take notice and you will receive favor. "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
(Gen 41:45 NIV) Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. And Joseph went throughout the land of Egypt.
(Prov 18:22 NIV) He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.
We often get special treatment because of whose we are. Whose kid we are, or who we are in relationship with. Too many times, itís not what you know, but itís who you know.
i.e., Bill and I went to Detox to visit a friend. We were told we could not see him because our names were not on the list of visitors. I asked the worker if she could ask our client if he would add our names to the list. She refused to do this, and escorted out of Detox. I was stunned that we were treated like this so I called a friend and shared what happened. He was shocked and told us he would make a phone call and take care of this immediately. A few minutes later he called back. The boss at Detox was furious and told us to come right back. She apologized and told us that because we work for the Rescue Mission we should have been allowed right in. Because of who we work for, who we are in relationship with, we have the favor of men. "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
I mentioned earlier that even though we have the favor of God it doesnít mean we never have trouble. We experienced some that day in Detox, and do often. Right now we are trying to buy a building to house homeless men. Several months ago our Mayor and County Executive offered support for our plans. About a week ago our bosses went before a Committee in City Hall for final acceptance of our plans. All the members of the Committee were supportive of our plans, and about two minutes into our presentation the Chairman of the Committee was handed a letter. Our County Executive wrote the Committee asking them to table the discussion for one month so the County could think more about what they want to do with the part of town this building is in.
In Your Best Life Now, Joel shared how he thanks God for having His favor. "Father, I thank You that I have Your favor. Your favor is opening doors of opportunity. Your favor is bringing success into my life. Your favor is causing people to want to help me." (Your Best Life Now, p. 41)
On Tuesday night I prayed that God would grant me favor with Government officials and other leaders on behalf of the Rescue Mission. On Wednesday I received an email from a friend who is a News Reporter. He told me he has been thinking a lot about me and the Rescue Mission and would like to find out how he can help us. On Thursday I received a phone call from a friend who writes for the newspaper. She told me she wants me to be proactive and write a Guest Viewpoint for our paper. She then shared a few ideas of what I should include in this article so it could encourage more people to support our plans. "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
We are Godís workmanship created in Messiah to do good works which He prepared in advance for us to. He wants us to be the salt of the earth, and the light of the world. He has plans for all of our lives, and in order to fulfill His plans we need the favor of men. We need
1) approval or liking. 2) an act of kindness beyond what is due or usual. 3) overgenerous preferential treatment.
We need this, and we can have it. I encourage you to pray the prayer I read from Your Best Life Now, and the Prayer of Jabez found in 1 Chr 4:10 (NIV)
Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.
If you will pray these prayers I believe God will grant your request too. Remember, "Favor with God, leads to favor with man."
