|Exo 25:23-30 NIV) "Make a table of acacia wood - two cubits long, a cubit wide and a cubit and a half high. Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. Also make around it a rim a handbreadth wide and put a gold molding on the rim. Make four gold rings for the table and fasten them to the four corners, where the four legs are. The rings are to be close to the rim to hold the poles used in carrying the table. Make the poles of acacia wood, overlay them with gold and carry the table with them. And make its plates and dishes of pure gold, as well as its pitchers and bowls for the pouring out of offerings. Put the bread of the Presence on this table to be before Me at all times.
(Lev 24:5-9 NIV) "Take fine flour and bake twelve loaves of bread, using two-tenths of an ephah for each loaf. Set them in two rows, six in each row, on the table of pure gold before the LORD. Along each row put some pure incense as a memorial portion to represent the bread and to be an offering made to the LORD by fire. This bread is to be set out before the LORD regularly, Sabbath after Sabbath, on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant. It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a holy place, because it is a most holy part of their regular share of the offerings made to the LORD by fire."
The bread is to be set out before the LORD every Sabbath. It is to be eaten by Aaron and his sons. God provided for their needs.
12 loaves representing the 12 tribes of Israel; or all His people. He wants all His people to be before Him or in His presence at all times.
Showbread - bread of the face or presence because the bread was set before the face or presence of God who lived in the Tabernacle.
(Matt 4:4 NIV) Yeshua answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
(Message) "It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth."
Physical bread keeps our bodies alive. But there is more to life than having our bodies function. Physical life is only a part of our full existence. We are more than skin and bones.
(John 6:26 NIV) Yeshua answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for Me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
Yeshua met their physical needs; this got their attention. "I offered free food and so you want to follow Me."
(John 6:30-31 NIV) So they asked Him, "What miraculous sign then will You give that we may see it and believe You? What will you do? Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
Give us a miracle so we can believe. In the beginning of chapter 6 Yeshua fed 5,000 men + women and children. Verse 2 tells us that these people had just seen Him miraculously heal lots of sick people. Now they say to Him, "Give us a miracle to prove You’re someone special." Then they say to Yeshua, "Our ancestors had manna from heaven. Food showed up out of nowhere everyday; top that!"
(John 6:27 NIV) Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.
(John 6:33-35 NIV) For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread." Then Yeshua declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty.
Earthly food meets your bodies need. This is important. But more importantly you need food for your spirit. You need to take care of your spirit, and make sure it has what it needs to live. Then Yeshua tells the people that He is their spiritual bread. He is the source of life for their spiritual needs.
(John 6:42 NIV) They said, "Is this not Yeshua, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, 'I came down from heaven'?"
If Yeshua said He came from heaven, what is He saying about Himself? He is God! This is not a doctrine made up by disciples of Yeshua several hundred years after His death and resurrection as Muslims and some other people teach. He declared Himself to be God. This is a very important belief about Yeshua and our faith.
The bread provided earthly food for the priests. We are a royal priesthood, or priests of God in Messiah so we feed on Yeshua, the bread of life (whether or not we come from the tribe of Levi).
(Rev 3:20 NIV) Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with Me.
Yeshua is asking us if we would like to spend time with Him. Here He says for Him to come in we need to open the door and invite Him in. He is knocking on our doors. He wants to come in and join us for a meal but we decide whether or not we open the door and let Him come in.
i.e., Halloween at the Goldberg’s home. Most of the time we hid. We turned off the lights. Then we went into the basement or upstairs and turned on the TV. We ignored the knocks on the door. We decided that we did not want to meet the people who knocked on our doors.
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would you invite?
Why would you invite this person?
Why do you invite certain people to dinner, and not other people?
When you invite people over for a meal you don’t sit quietly and focus all your attention on eating your food, do you? No. You spend time talking with your guests. You get to know your guest. You share stories while you eat. Having guests over for dinner is not simply to meet a biological need. It also has social purposes. You do it to enjoy your relationship with people.
(Matt 9:9-11 Message) Passing along, Yeshua saw a man at his work collecting taxes. His name was Matthew. Yeshua said, "Come along with Me." Matthew stood up and followed Him. Later when Yeshua was eating supper at Matthew's house with his close followers, a lot of disreputable characters came and joined them. When the Pharisees saw Him keeping this kind of company, they had a fit, and lit into Yeshua’s followers. "What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cozy with crooks and riffraff?"
(Luke 15:1-3 Message) By this time a lot of men and women of doubtful reputation were hanging around Yeshua, listening intently. The Pharisees and religion scholars were not pleased, not at all pleased. They growled, "He takes in sinners and eats meals with them, treating them like old friends." Their grumbling triggered this story.
(Luke 19:17 Message) Then Yeshua entered and walked through Jericho. There was a man there, his name Zacchaeus, the head tax man and quite rich. He wanted desperately to see Yeshua, but the crowd was in his way - he was a short man and couldn't see over the crowd. So he ran on ahead and climbed up in a sycamore tree so he could see Yeshua when he came by. When Yeshua got to the tree, He looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, hurry down. Today is My day to be a guest in your home." Zacchaeus scrambled out of the tree, hardly believing his good luck, delighted to take Yeshua home with him. Everyone who saw the incident was indignant and grumped, "What business does he have getting cozy with this crook?"
Food and fellowship go together. Fellowship is not hanging out and simply socializing. Fellowship involves listening to God. Listening to God is hearing the Bible in any way possible.
Yeshua wants to meet your biological needs. He created your bodies with the need for physical food so He is concerned that you eat physical food and are healthy. He also talks about getting together for a meal because He wants to enjoy a close personal relationship with Him. Yeshua is also very concerned about our spiritual needs. He wants us to eat spiritual food as well as natural food. Yeshua is our spiritual food so He desires to spend time with us. He wants us to feast on His Words. Yeshua wants us to read the Bible by ourselves. He wants us to study it with others. Yeshua also wants us to listen to other people teach the Bible.
The Bread of God’s Presence, or before His face all the time.
When I graduated college with a BS in Elementary Education my father suggested I seek a job teaching at St Rose of Lima’s Catholic School. My father was not supportive of my faith in Yeshua, but he was thinking about how he was going to deal with my faith, and how he would interact with friends and relatives regarding my faith. My dad told me that if I taught at St Rose of Lima I could freely talk about Yeshua from 9 AM - 3 Pm. Then at 3 PM I could leave Yeshua in the classroom and just be a Jew the rest of the day. I could get my fix of Yeshua, then I could make it as a Jew without Jesus the rest of the time.
I told my dad that I could not do that. I shared that I needed to be with Yeshua, and talk about Him, all the time. He is the bread of life. He is the source of life. Just like we need oxygen to breathe all day long, we need the bread of life all day long.
We need to feast on Yeshua; not scrimp or just get by. We do not want to be physically or spiritually malnourished. There are to many mal-nourished believers on this planet.
Let’s pray that we will become hungry for more of God.
