"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." (Jeremiah 2:13)

God is telling Jeremiah that the Jewish people have forsaken God, and that they created their own religion or means of salvation. I read in a book that a man named Jeff was talking with Jacob (an Israeli) one day and said, "Isn't it a terrible waste of time and energy to look in vain for the true meaning of life in places where it cannot be found, in broken cisterns that hold no water?" (See Jeremiah 2:13) "Jeff pronounced these words with such authority that it sounded as if they came to me straight from heaven. He seemed to know me thoroughly, including all those empty wells that I frequented in a futile search for the waters of life!" (Damkani, Jacob, Why Me?, Whitaker House, New Kensington, NJ, 1997, p. 83)

I believe that this is true of many Jewish people, and people from every nation. Many people have forsaken God. Instead of accepting what God has already told us (as recorded in the Bible). They are creating their own cisterns. They have made their own religion, or ways of finding fulfillment in life. They have decided that they can enjoy a relationship with God in ways different from what God has told us. Unfortunately, God has told us in Jeremiah that these cisterns are broken. These cisterns, religions, or ways of finding fulfillment in life, just don’t work. They are like empty cisterns. The water just runs out the holes or cracks, and people never get to enjoy it. It may look or sound good, but unfortunately it never brings what people expected.

Please pray that they would seek a relationship with God through His means of salvation (Yeshua), as He revealed to us in the Scriptures.
